Atomicity, consistency, isolation, durability: a database transaction is all-or-nothing, valid, isolated from others and permanent once committed.

Atomicity: all or nothing. A transfer debits A and credits B, or neither happens.
Consistency: constraints hold before and after (a balance can't go negative).
Isolation: concurrent transactions don't see each other's half-done work, to the chosen isolation level.
Durability: once committed it survives crashes, thanks to the write-ahead log.
