The application checks the cache first; on a miss it reads the database and writes the result into the cache.

the two-minute refresher

Read: GET cache → miss → SELECT from DB → SET cache with TTL → return.
Write: update the database, then invalidate (delete) or update the cache entry.
Only requested data gets cached, and a cache outage just means slower reads.
The most common pattern; the first request for each key is always a miss.
