One leader takes all writes and streams changes to followers (replicas); reads can go to the leader or any follower.

Read replicas scale reads and keep copies for failover.
Asynchronous followers lag: a read may miss a just-made write.
The leader is the write bottleneck and must be replaced on failure (failover).
