Pivot transaction.

also: pivot step · point of no return · forward recovery · backward recovery

The saga step after which it must complete: earlier failures are compensated (backward recovery), later ones retried (forward recovery).

the two-minute refresher

Backward recovery: a step fails → undo the previous steps → original state.
Forward recovery: a step fails → retry until it succeeds → the saga completes.
Many sagas use both: compensate before the pivot, retry after it.
Put the riskiest, hardest-to-undo step (often the payment) at the pivot.
