A redundancy pattern: the primary serves all traffic while a standby replicates its data and is promoted if the primary fails.

the two-minute refresher

Primary (active) takes the traffic; the standby (passive) keeps a replica.
On failure, promote the standby: that is failover.
Simple, but the standby's capacity sits idle and failover takes time.
Active-active instead serves from every node, at the cost of conflict handling.
